Who is the H. Chesnut on Register Rock along the Oregon Trail?

During a 1983 vacation in the Pacific Northwest, I stopped at a rest area  on Hwy. 86 in Idaho that ran parallel to the Oregon Trail. At the rest area there was a huge rock on which many Pioneers had long ago carved their names. One name in particular, for whatever reason, seemed to "mesmerize" me. That name was H. Chesnut (or W. H. Chesnut), and was accompanied by the date, August 20, 1862. Over the years, during subsequent vacations "out West," I have made it a point to visit what I have affectionately named "Chesnut's Rock." In spite of my many efforts over the years, I have been unsuccessful in learning anything whatsoever about "my" H. Chesnut. It defies explanation that I have this "need to know" about this individual that just won't rest. When Internet researching yielded your name, I became so hopeful and encouraged that possibly, at long last, I might make contact with someone who would know, or perhaps be as interested as me in finding out about H. Chesnut!
