Northeastern
Segment (near Whitesburg to intersection with KY-160 near
Cumberland)
Middle
Segment (from intersection with KY-160 near Cumberland to
intersection
with KY-2010 above Pine Mountain Settlement School)
Southwestern
Segment
(from intersection
with KY-2010 above Pine Mountain Settlement School
to intersection with US-421 near Harlan.)
Northeastern
Segment:
This
is the most beautiful road in Kentucky! This segment is a
narrow,
one-laned, paved road with tight, sometimes blind curves. There are
some
very nice overlooks along the way. This road crosses the northern part
of Kingdom Come State Park near Cumberland, Kentucky.
Middle Segment:
This segment is not paved. There are numerous washed-out ruts and large
rocks in the road. This would not
be good for touring motorcycles, large cruisers, or compact cars.
However, SUV-type vehicles, on-road/off-road motorcycles, and mountain
bikes should be alright.
Southwestern
Segment:
This
segment is paved, but for the five miles closest to US-421, the
pavement has deep ruts and is partially gravelled. This last five miles
would be difficult for large motorcycles and is not as pleasant as the
rest of the trail because of dogs and very trashy residences along the
way.
